Student Development

A.1. The student interviews a close relation about his/her (the student’s) learning development.

(Mom/Dad)
How often did I read when I was younger? Did I like to read?
You read as often as you possibly could. You would consume books like candy, and we had to coax you to go play outside.
What subjects was I interested in as a child?
You obviously liked English, but the thing you enjoyed most was public speaking. Even at a young age you were always ready to jump at any chance you had to get on stage.
What the hell went wrong?
As far as we can tell, nothing so far.
Did I turn things in on time?
Yes and no. You usually finished tasks on time, but you often forgot your assignments at home. We would have to bring them to you at school.
What are some of the ways I learn best?
You learn and communicate most effectively by talking and demonstrating. You are more of a visual learner and like to see things presented in a new way.
How do I study? With music on? At the last minute?
You absolutely MUST have some ambient sounds in the background, whether it be the TV, radio, or your iPod. Yes, you do put things of till the last humanely possible seconds.
What did I like to do outside of school when I was younger?
You enjoyed playing tennis, rollerblading, and swimming till you were pruny. The rollerblades still scare us a bit as they gave you 17 stitches.
(Answered by Friends)- These are offbeat questions, but they reveal my character in a more interesting fashion.
What career do you see me in?
Professional juggler because you are good at multi-tasking and you like to entertain. You think life is too important to be taken seriously. (Oscar Wilde)
What kind of fruit could I best be?
A strawberry because you are colorful and usually sweet.
If I were a salesperson, what product would I sell?
“It would have to be something that seems too good to be true, because you are good at lying and persuading people you con artist. You would sell like one of those "get rich quick" scams.”

A.2. Student’s personal reflection on his/her own development as it relates to the course strands; your history with technology – early experiences, etc.

Your experience in past English courses. Did you like it?
I have enjoyed most of my experiences in past English courses. I do very much like reading; but writing, especially analytical pieces, have always been tough for me. My favorite experience in an English class is writing and creating a hip hop video based on the epic poem Beowulf. It was pretty awesome- fo shizzle.
What did the teacher make you do?
My favorite teacher in high school was an English teacher who I had for 10th and 12th grade. He seemed so passionate about English that you could not help but get into it. He made us read and write like all the others, but somehow managed to make us learn without making it a struggle.
Arguing. Are you good at it?
I can be a persuasive speaker, and can use media fairly well to communicate my ideas.
What’s your writing process? Do you start early or at the last minute, etc. What is helpful to you when you’re trying to get started writing something?
I try to start things at least a couple of days before its due, but rarely finish a paper earlier than the night before. I try to get down as many ideas as possible, but when I hit a mental block, I stop right away. I have to take a break before the ideas start flowing again. SpongeBob usually gets my mind back on track.
Technology – what do you use in your daily life? Facebook, internet, texting, whatever.
I use all of these on a daily basis. In today’s world you almost have to. I find texting and e-mail very useful because I do not feel that comfortable talking on the phone. In a weird way, there are things that you can say to someone in written form that would seem inappropriate or dumb if spoken.
In general, give me a picture of you as a person.

Well you should now that this is what I normally look like. I just don't bother with all the make-up and hairstyling during school. You should also know that I rarely take anything too seriously. I am open to any new ideas and come to your class with mind just waiting to learn.

  1. Fantastic post Kanika!! You make me laugh. You were not supposed to actually ask your parents what the hell went wrong; they must think I'm a maniac. Thanks for taking the assignment seriously - in an unserious way.
